Food for Thoughts

Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.

I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.

Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you to everywhere.

When the impossibility has been eliminated, whatever improbable remains... is possible.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.

Valentines Day

(from a note made by Juliet Roberts - a friend of mine)

Dictionary.com describes Valentines Day as a day to “exchange of valentines and other tokens of affection.” Hmmm. To me, that is pretty vague. “Tokens of affection” can be anything. It leaves way too much room for interpretation. Someone can take it as just a simple box of chocolates, or a teddy bear and a red rose. While these things are acceptable for this occasion, it is expected to get more than just that. Valentines Day, to me and probably many of you out there, is supposed to be a day where your partner, if you are with someone, shows you the very extension of their love, whether it be just a box of chocolates, or everlasting. Unfortunately, not all men go to such great lengths to show this “token of affection” but, some men have.

“But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the garish day and in the darkest night - amidst your happiest scenes and gloomiest hours - always, always; and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath; or the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by.” This was written by Major Sullivan Ballou. He wrote this to his wife just before he went to battle. Granted, it wasn’t sent to her on Valentines Day but, if a guy said anything remotely close to this to me on Valentines Day, I would be in heaven."

Major Sullivan Ballou is not the only man in the past able to express his love in such a sweet manner. Napolean Bonaparte is also in the running.
“ Paris, December 1795

"I wake filled with thoughts of you. Your portrait and the intoxicating evening which we spent yesterday have left my senses in turmoil. Sweet, incomparable Josephine, what a strange effect you have on my heart! Are you angry? Do I see you looking sad? Are you worried?... My soul aches with sorrow, and there can be no rest for you lover; but is there still more in store for me when, yielding to the profound feelings which overwhelm me, I draw from your lips, from your heart a love which consumes me with fire? Ah! it was last night that I fully realized how false an image of you your portrait gives!

You are leaving at noon; I shall see you in three hours.

Until then, mio dolce amor, a thousand kisses; but give me none in return, for they set my blood on fire.”

If that doesn’t make you feel any sort of warm or gushy feeling, then you are seriously deranged. Every time I read this, ( and I have read this about 100 times) my heart starts to speed up and I get a bit dizzy. Reading this makes me feel as if it was written just for me. Call me crazy, but it’s the truth.

Of course these are only two men out of countless who have written love letters to the ones they love. Here are a few more:

“My dearest,
When two souls, which have sought each other for,
however long in the throng, have finally found each other ...a union, fiery and pure as they themselves are... begins on earth and continues forever in heaven.
This union is love, true love, ... a religion, which deifies the loved one, whose life comes from devotion and passion, and for which the greatest sacrifices are the sweetest delights.
This is the love which you inspire in me... Your soul is made to love with the purity and passion of angels; but perhaps it can only love another angel, in which case I must tremble with apprehension.
Yours forever,
Victor Hugo (1821)"

“ I cannot exist without you - I am forgetful of every thing but seeing you again - my life seems to stop there - I see no further. You have absorb'd me.

I have a sensation at the present moment as though I were dissolving ....I have been astonished that men could die martyrs for religion - I have shudder'd at it - I shudder no more - I could be martyr'd for my religion - love is my religion - I could die for that - I could die for you. My creed is love and you are its only tenet - you have ravish'd me away by a power I cannot resist.

- John Keats”

“My golden child, my pearl, my precious stone, my crown, my queen and empress. You dear darling of my heart, my highest and most precious, my all and everything, my wife, the baptism of my children, my tragic play, my posthumous reputation. Ach! You are my second better self, my virtues, my merits, my hope, the forgiveness of my sins, my future sanctity, O little daughter of heaven, my child of God, my intercessor, my guardian angel, my cherubim and seraph, how I love you!” - Henry von Kleist

Romantic huh? If only every guy were like that, right ladies? Well, it is now 12:19 in the morning on February 14th, so before I bid you all goodbye, I want to share my favorite line: “ Ever Thine, Ever Mine, Ever Ours”- Ludwig van Beethoven.

With that I wish you all a happy Valentines Day. To all you coupes, hope you share the most romantic night with your “hubbies”. To all you single people, your not alone.

xoxo

Subtlety

The ancients did not seek to rule people with knowledge,
But to help them become natural.
It is difficult for knowledgeable people to become natural.

To use law to control a nation weakens the nation.
But to use nature to control a nation strengthens the nation.

Understanding these two paths is understanding subtlety;
Subtlety runs deep, ranges wide,
Resolves confusion and preserves peace.
